So starts the debut single from Today’s Mathematics: a musical meeting of the minds between jazz head Cousin J and hip hop junkie Testament (Homecut Directive). After a chance encounter in a Leeds Jazz Club, and the addition of sultry vocalist Shaheen, the group began work on their debut album (due for release in the autumn) in early 2003. Butterfl y represents both their first single, and their first completed track as a group, and is a pointer to what you can expect in the future from the crew: conscious lyricism, laid-back, jazzy grooves and a hefty slice of modern British soul.

Multi-instrumentalist Cousin J has been producing music for over 15 years: an original player in Leeds’ notorious DIG! Family and DJ at Back To Basics his musical journey began when he was 16 years old in the rarefied atmosphere of Gilles Peterson’s infamous Sunday afternoon Dingwalls sessions. Inspired by the sounds that went on to define 90’s jazz in the UK, J started funk outfit Sidewinder whose single 'Together/Crack The Crackers? (Tongue 'n’ Groove) became a floor filler at clubs across the globe, including legendary NYC spot 'Giant Steps’.

Testament has been spitting rhymes since he was fourteen, rocking clubs for the last seven years, having performed with UK heavyweights Jehst, Mark B & Blade and Fingathing. Testament’s crew Homecut Directive released their debut 12’ last year to widespread critical acclaim.

Butterfly takes us on a journey into the soul of the 'urban countryside’, to find spiritual transformation. Testament and Cousin J’s lazy verses are woven into a gorgeous, organic beat, creating the perfect summertime vibe: Butterfly will entice a springtime smile from even the most grey-faced commuter. Added to this is a deep, jazzy remix from ex-Cookin? Records don Cedar (now a full-time member of the Maths? live show). With a change of tempo, extra vocals, rhodes and guitar, it switches up the vibe of the original, and points the way to a new style for Cedar, creating a track perfect for the more leftfield dancefloor.
