Babyhead are one of the United Kingdom’s fastest growing independent acts and this is their first single Shownuff, to be taken from their forthcoming album Babyboom Town. As an entity, their appeal cannot be defined by one aspect alone. It’s not just the combination of the horn section with turntable decksterity that gets any crowds attention. It’s not just the infectious nature of heavy dub bass and ska chops over a hip-hop backbeat that gets them moving. Nor is it the cutting edge lyricism delivered with unwavering tenacity that holds the attention until the encore.
“Shownuff” displays all that is best about Babyhead – dubby, ska infused beats with that cutting edge lyricism. For the band an indictment of the mental battle of the games people play; set to the soundtrack of a Broadway showtune in a dimension where Cab Calloway, KRS One and The Clash would jam until the final velvet red curtain fell.
“Recording Device” is a personable, emotive tune. A trip down memory lane full of teenage dreams, madcap schemes, with evening sun streaming through the van after a long weekend on the road. In essence a tune about the alliance brought about by nine men sharing the same van, room and songs for the last decade.
